This is a famous encyclopedia of painting materials and tools. The first edition was printed in 1943, and the last ed. printed in 1966 is almost same as the first ed. Therefore explanations about recent materials such as synthetic resins, pigments , etc. on this book are imperfect. But , to research classical or natural materials , it's the best encyclopedia for us.

D. V. Thompson "The Practice of Tempera Painting"

It's a very simple text for practice of tempera painitng.

Max Doerner "The Materials of the Artist and Their Use in Painting"
HARCOURT BRACE , $16.00
This is one of the most famous technical book written in 20th century. The first edition was printed in 1921, Germany. And then it had been often revised for adjusting to new researches by Doerner or his followers. But sometimes those revisings have made this book confusing and unclear.

Arthur Pillans Laurie "Painter's Methods and Materials"

General explanations about methods and materials, such as mediums , pigments , supports , etc.

C. D. Cennini "Craftsman's Handbook"
It's the most famous technical book in the western painting history. Cennino d'Andrea Cennini was one of followers of Giotto (strict speaking , a follower of a follower of Giotto). This book explains about mideaval painting techniques that were before or around the inventing of oil painting method. The recent English edition was translated by D.V.Thompson in 1933.
